1~ WHY WOULD THIS TECHNICAL JARGON NOT BE EXPLAINED IN THIS TEXT??
Technical jargon used in chapter 3 such as the sticht plate, and honeycombed snow, are not explained it this text. This is mainly because the reader should have enough common knowledge about the words placed around the technical jargon, to realise what these words and phrases mean. For example on page 43 joe says “I tensed, holding the ropes locked in the sticht plate, so that i could hold his fall immediately” from this sentence we can put together the idea that a sticht plate is a piece of climbing equipment like a harness or something similar.
2~ SELECT AROUND 6 EXAMPLES AND EXPLAIN WHAT THIS TECHNICAL JARGON MEANS AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT IN THIS SECTION OF THE TEXT:
(p.40) Gully- A gully is a small channel or valley in land, typically on a hillside between rocks, created by running water or ice.
(p.43) “Friend”- An SLCD, cam or friend is a spring-loaded camming device or a piece of rock climbing or mountaineering protection equipment.
(p.44) Crampons- a metal plate with spikes fixed on that you attach to boots for walking on ice or rock climbing.
(p.47) Powder- A fine form of deep snow that resembles a powder.
(p.48) Bivi- A small shelter made of waterproof materials much like tents.
(p.50) Traverse- Going across the mountain horizontally to get from one point to another.
