NCEA 2.4 Writing Portfolio Option 2: Being There – Setting Description
A calming chaos of tidy clutter fills the wide open circular room. Colourful creativity, plants, clothes, crystals and paintings… Tibetan flags hang above the door entering into this magical space away from the busy world. An instant sense of calm and belonging floods your body making you feel welcomed. All your stress and worries drift away unknowingly as you get distracted scanning your fascinated eyes around the well travelled wall. You see a collection of interesting trinkets and random souvenirs holding special memories from around the world. An old and patchy Nepalese tapestry hangs above the cosy blanketed bed. To the right, Nepalese masks sit on my sun-filled paint covered desk by the window, staring into the room, watching with their dark hollow eyes. Above hangs a fern, slowly shedding its leaves, floating down to meet the half finish artwork. By the door is an explosion of brightly coloured clothing, half hung/falling off a broken clothing rack, the other half carelessly thrown into two retro suitcases on the floor. On the dresser, empty inside, 5 ski plaques are lined up 1st to 3rd like proud athletes on a podium. Skis carefully balanced against the wall beside.
The disappearing sunlight fills the space with a subtle warm welcoming golden light. A slow burning fire crackling warmth inside this sauna, while outside the insulated walls it could be snowing. There for you to put your feet upon as you take a seat on the couch, a hand made table made of old skateboards, scratched and cracked with doodled graffiti all over. The hugging walls comfort you making it impossible for you to want to leave. When you think it couldn’t get any better, two bounding dogs approach you with love and excitement for attention. The happiness and eagerness showing through their windmill tails and dripping tongues spreads contagiously to your mood, along with coats of dog hair on your black clothing.
Listen to the cold coming from inside the shed, the aggressive roar of the diesel heater, blaring great warmth for mum preparing dinner. Outside cool crystals of frost begin to form a blanket of cold over each blade of grass. As the night takes over the day the moon appears and the sun disappears behind the far horizon. Birds no longer harmonising in song, and the sound of day now a still silence. Watch out the window as the sun slowly melts behind the snow covered peaks in the distance. The light fades away to reveal one by one the countless amount of stars in the clear night black sky. Look closely to see the slight red and white flicker of the twinkling stars. Out the corner of your eye you see a quick swoosh of brightness shooting across the sky, close your eyes, make a wish, and it’s gone.
An angelic white dream catcher hangs, sparkling softly, like the galaxy in the sky behind, amongst it’s swaying strands, capturing any negative thoughts entering this space. A collection of crystals pleasantly sit together in a huddle gently glowing on my bedside table, releasing the heavenly, and stress relieving energy of the moon and stars into the room. Your head and soul oblivious to any chaotic negativity almost in a nirvana state of mind. The soothing smell of rose blossom flavoured incense makes it smell pleasurably peaceful like sitting alone in a field of wild flowers in the sun. The smoke of the incense floats like a foggy cloud just above eye-level, slowly drifting around the room with its scent.
The dogs now calm and resting in a dreamy doze, grunting and twitching as they chase the rabbits running through their empty mind. Rabbits outside run away trying to find a shelter amongst the rustling bushes and swaying trees in the rattling wind. The walls and roof shake and flap freely as though they are about to lift off and fly away.
